Cyber Security Roundtable 2024: Exploring the Future of Automation and AI in Security with Microsoft

On October 17, 2024, water IT Security, in collaboration with Microsoft, hosted the third Cyber Security Roundtable at Microsoft's Munich office. Focused on the cutting-edge topics of Automation and Microsoft Copilot for Security, this exclusive event brought together industry leaders, security experts, and our valued customers to delve into the future of cybersecurity, automation, and AI.

A Day Packed with Insights and Innovation

The day’s agenda was carefully crafted to provide attendees with both broad and in-depth perspectives on the evolving security landscape. Through keynotes, hands-on workshops, and tailored breakout sessions, participants gained actionable insights and discussed real-world strategies for automation in cybersecurity.

Keynote Highlights: The Role of AI in Cybersecurity

The event kicked off with powerful keynotes from Andreas Wach, Partner Solution Architect at Microsoft, and Jamil Mirza, Principal Program Manager at Microsoft. They shared insights into the role of Microsoft Copilot for Security, exploring how AI and automation are transforming the industry. Their presentations emphasized the ways Copilot can enhance efficiency in security operations, making processes faster and smarter, while reducing manual workloads. This introduction set a strong foundation for the day, sparking interest and engagement around how AI can redefine security strategies.

“Automation by Water”: From Detection Engineering to Automation

One of the event’s central sessions, "Automation by Water," was led by me (Andreas Rogge). This session took attendees on a journey from detection engineering to automation, offering deep dives into best practices and practical advice on building efficient automation into security workflows.

I shared insights, highlighting key considerations when implementing automation, from initial planning and requirements gathering to integration within a broader security strategy. Attendees appreciated the clear examples and actionable steps, which made complex concepts accessible and ready to implement. This session provided an essential foundation for anyone looking to leverage automation to enhance security operations and efficiency.

Breakout Workshops: Tailored Sessions for Practical Applications

After the main sessions, participants divided into two targeted breakout workshops, allowing for a more hands-on approach to implementing automation in their own environments.

  • Breakout Session 1: Copilot for Security and the First Promptbook
Led by Tobias Liebing from water IT Security and Jamil Mirza from Microsoft, this workshop focused on how to get started with Microsoft Copilot for Security by developing an initial promptbook. Tobias and Jamil walked participants through the steps of setting up and customizing prompts to enhance security responses, making it an ideal session for those looking to implement Copilot for Security effectively from day one.
  • Breakout Session 2: Custom Automation for the Customer
Led by Giuliano Schneider and me from water IT Security, this session dived into custom automation solutions tailored specifically to individual customer needs. They guided participants through building automation workflows that address their unique security challenges, enabling them to leave with actionable steps and customized strategies for immediate application in their security environments.

This hands-on approach allowed attendees to explore solutions tailored to their organizational needs, making the workshops highly valuable for those looking to take immediate action following the roundtable.

Networking and Connections Over Dinner

One of the key goals of our Cyber Security Roundtable series is to foster collaboration and build a supportive community of like-minded professionals. The event concluded with a joint dinner, offering a relaxed atmosphere where participants could continue their conversations, share insights, and develop professional relationships. This networking opportunity allowed for meaningful connections and highlighted the importance of collaboration within the cybersecurity industry.
